An invitation. . . . to the “Picos de Europa” July 26 - August 3 2018
(with the possibility of staying overnight till Aug 4)
The Spanish Pilgrims have organised the 2018 international pilgrimage in northern Spain. It will start in Comillas (Cantabria) on July 26 and will end in Potes at the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana on August 3, 2018.
Comillas, the starting point, is a signifcant town in Cantabria. Architecturally, as well the town square and church of the eighteenth century, it has many interesting Art Nouveau buildings - the Sobrellano Palace, the Pontifical University and the brilliant "El Capricho" designed by Antonio Gaudí.
The route of the pilgrimage is through the Picos de Europa - a Regional Park of great natural beauty, limestone mountains, sparkling rivers and great biodiversity in its animals and plant life. Some groups may walk part of the Liébana way - one of the old pilgrim routes, along which pilgrims travel to the Monastery of Santo Toribio, especially during Jubilee Years.
The route ends near Potes at the famous Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, where the final celebration of the Pilgrimage will take place. These buildings go back to the 6th c. and since 1961 have been under the care of a small community of Franciscans.
Alongside Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Jerusalem and Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia), it is recognised as one of the 5 places in the Catholic world in which the Holy Year is celebrated; a tradition going back to 1512 and celebrated every time April 16, the feast of Santo Toribio, falls on a Sunday.
The monastery is famous, among other things, because it was here that, in the 8th century, Beatus of Liébana, abbot of this monastery, wrote the "Commentaries to the Apocalypse” and Bishop Toribio de Astorga, brought, from the Holy Land, a relic of the "Lignum Crucis", the largest known piece of the Cross of Christ, and one of the few the Catholic church recognises as authentic.
During the Pilgrimage we will have opportunites to reflect on the theme for this year - “Migrations, people in movement" - a very current theme with all that is happening to refugees today. looking at the the ideas from the viewpoint of St Francis of Assisi who inspires the Pilgrims of St Francis
This is an invitation for everyone to join this pilgrimage. The Spanish also hope that some will be willing to serve as leaders of the groups (guardian, troubadour, spiritual animator, chapter animator or housekeeper) and that those who come by car will be willing to allow it to be used as a group vehicle carrying food and/or baggage for those who cannot carry everything.
